WHY YOUR LINKEDIN MESSAGES ARE GETTING IGNORED

May 20, 2026

You have probably heard this advice before:

  •  “Just reach out to people on LinkedIn.”
  • “Message hiring managers.”
  • “Network and opportunities will come.”

Sounds simple. But if that actually worked the way people say it does, you would already be getting replies… and interviews.

The truth? There is an art and science to LinkedIn messaging.

And most people are unknowingly making a few mistakes that guarantee silence. Let’s fix that.

1. The “Hi, how are you?” message

This is the fastest way to get ignored. LinkedIn is not WhatsApp. It’s not real-time conversation. When someone sees a vague message with no context, they are already thinking: “What’s coming next?”

And most people don’t have the time or energy to find out.

2. Zero research, copy-paste outreach

This is more common than you think. Messages that clearly show you haven’t even spent 2 minutes on someone’s profile. Generic asks. No personalization.

If you don’t invest time in understanding them, they won’t invest time in replying to you.

3. No warm-up, straight to the ask

Cold messages can work. But warm messages work far better. If you’ have never engaged with someone’s content, never commented, never shown up… Why should they respond to you?

Visibility builds familiarity. Familiarity builds trust.

4. The “me, me, me” message

Long paragraphs about:

  • “I’ve done this…”
  • “I’m great at that…”
  • “I’m looking for…”

And nothing about the other person. Remember:

People respond to relevance, not resumes.

 5. Asking too much, too soon

  • “Can you refer me?”
  • “Can you help me get a job?”
  • “Are there openings in your company?”

All in the first message. There’s no relationship. No context. No trust. Your goal is not to get a job from the first message. Your goal is to start a conversation.

Here’s the reality most people don’t tell you:

Even with the best approach, you will probably get responses from only 25–30% of your messages. And that’s okay.

Because job search is not about perfection. It’s about consistency + strategy. That’s what separates people who stay stuck… from people who start seeing traction!
