STRUGGLING WITH "TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF"? FIX THIS AND EVERYTHING ELSE GETS EASIER

Oct 15, 2025

You have been invited for an interview and you already know what question is coming:

"Tell me about yourself"

It's the opening to almost every interview. And it's also the moment where most candidates... fall flat.

  • Instead of grabbing attention, they recite their CV.
  • Instead of showing relevance, they list titles and job moves.
  • Instead of creating a spark, they deliver a script

Here's the truth: "Tell me about yourself" is not a warm-up. It is your single biggest shot at controlling the rest of the interview.

It is your chance to say:

"Here is what I bring. Here is why I matter to your business. And here's what we can solve together."

A simple structure to transform your answer:

  • Start with context. Your years of experience + the breadth of your functional or industry expertise.
  • Pull out 2-3 specific stories aligned with what the company needs. Not random highlights, relevant ones that solve real problems.
  • Wrap it up with a why. Why you are moving.

 All in 90-120 seconds.

And if you really want to blow them away? Add this question at the end:

"If you don't mind, is it okay to ask you a quick question?"

"May I ask what are your top priorities for this hire?"

That one question changes the tone. You are no longer the candidate being assessed. You are the strategic partner who just got invited into the room.

With you in growth,

Shub
