5 CAREER QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE 2026 BEGINS

Dec 10, 2025

As we wrap up 2025, I want to share with you something powerful, not a checklist, but five questions that can shift how you think about your career going into 2026.

Because before we sprint into new goals and resolutions, it’s worth pausing to reflect. Most of us do a lot but we rarely think about what it all means for our growth.

So here’s your five-question reflection to help you Be the CEO of your Career in 2026

1. How has 2025 been for your career?

What are your most significant achievements this year? Better yet, what can you update on your CV or LinkedIn right now that didn’t exist last year?

If your scope hasn’t grown (in project size, influence, or impact) it’s time to take charge of that in 2026.

Because standing still in your career is the same as moving backward.

2. What gets you in your Genius Zone?

That zone where time flies and you’re fully alive at work. Identify what that looks like and find ways to increase it from 10% to 20% of your time next year.

Always Be Careering means intentionally designing your work to energize you, not drain you.

3. What new professional relationships did you build this year?

Your network is your future, not your fallback. Make a list of the people you connected with and the ones you would like to build deeper ties with next year.

It doesn’t need to be formal, even a quick “This reminded me of you” message builds powerful, non-transactional relationships.

4. If it’s December 2026, what would make you say, “That was a great year”?

Maybe it’s a promotion. Maybe it’s balance. Maybe it’s more visibility. Whatever it is, write it down. Don’t limit yourself to what feels realistic right now.

Dream first. The how comes next.

 5. And if you could achieve just one thing next year, what would it be?

What’s that single outcome that would make 2026 a success?

Now, break it down: what needs to happen by Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 to get there? No full-blown action plan yet, just milestones to guide you.

Let these questions simmer. You don’t need to answer them all immediately.

Answers have a funny way of showing up when you least expect - in the shower, during a commute, or while reflecting quietly over the holidays.
